The GASD offers a quality educational environment, modern facilities,
and diverse curricula for students of all ages. The district has
Adams County’s highest percentage of students moving on to
postsecondary education and a drop-out rate of just 2.1%. Gettysburg

Gettysburg

Founded in 1832 by abolitionist theologian Samuel Simon Schmucker
and built in part on acreage provided by Fourteenth Amendment
author Thaddeus Stevens, Gettysburg College is intimately connected
to America’s history. Union soldiers retreated through the
campus on the first day of the great battle of 1863, Pennsylvania
Hall was a hospital for hundreds of wounded soldiers from both
sides, and Gettysburg College students marched from campus to
the nearby National Cemetery to hear President Abraham Lincoln’s
Gettysburg Address. Nearly a century later, another president,
Dwight D. Eisenhower, a trustee of Gettysburg College, wrote his
memoirs in what is today the College’s admissions office.
Gettysburg College has grown into one of the nation’s foremost
liberal arts colleges, where some 2,500 students engage the past
with eminent scholars, prepare for the future in state-of-the-art
laboratories, and confront present-day problems through the College’s
Center for Public Service. Students compete in intercollegiate
sports (a dozen each for woman and men) and a wide range of intramural
and club athletics, and express their individuality through extensive
musical, visual arts, and theatrical programs. The College owns
the Majestic Theater in downtown Gettysburg and plans to renovate
the 1925 historic building into a performing arts center for the
entire community. The Majestic is expected to reopen in November
2005, just in time to celebrate its eightieth birthday.
With a student-faculty ratio of 11 to 1, the College offers
36 academically rigorous majors in the social sciences, natural
sciences, and humanities, as well as preprofessional preparation
for law, medical, and business schools. Gettysburg College alumni
include Novel Prize-winning cancer researcher Dr. J. Michael Bishop
(’57), UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy (’63),
and Newbery Medal-winning author Jerry Spinelli (’63).
The
Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg • 61 Seminary
Ridge (717 334 6286) • A pioneer in Lutheran theological
education, the Gettysburg Seminary carries out its teaching mission
both rooted in the biblical and theological tradition and grounded
in the context where ministries take place. Started in 1826, LTSG
is the oldest of the eight seminaries of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America.
Harrisburg
Area Community College • 731 Old Harrisburg Road (717 337
3855) • HACC is an accessible, affordable, high quality,
comprehensive, multi-campus community college which serves as
a premier educational and workforce development institution. Quality
instruction, supported by cutting-edge technology and business-industry
collaboration, and offered in a learning-centered environment,
provides students with the knowledge, skills, and values they
need to compete and excel in today’s global economy.
Recreation
The 52-acre Gettysburg Area Recreation Park, located on Long
Lane, is home to seven baseball diamonds, a football field, an outdoor amphitheatre, two basketball courts,
tennis courts, two playgrounds, three pavilions, and a 20-station
outdoor fitness trail. The park’s new recreation building,
available for public use, houses the administrative office, a
seasonal snack bar, restrooms, and a fully-equipped kitchen. The
recreation department operates all year, with year round programming.

Health Care
Gettysburg
Hospital • 147 Gettys Street (717 337 4242) • Part
of the WellSpan Health System, Gettysburg Hospital has become
a comprehensive health care provider, with family health centers
across the region, a women's health center, state-of-the-art surgical
and diagnostic services, rehabilitative medicine centers, home
health services, a heart center (including a diagnostic cardiac
catheterization lab, cardiology services, and cardiac rehabilitation),
behavioral health, and preventive health education and screening
programs. The hospital also houses the Transitional Care Center,
a subacute care unit which also offers adult respite care services.
Farmers Market
Starting in May and running until September, the Farmers Market in Lincoln Square offers the finest in Adams County produce and farm products every Saturday from 7 a.m. until noon.
